Big Man, Little Man
Big Man, Little Man is a lyrical Documentary series that illustrates the alternative life of my son. No longer being the only child of two separated families, he struggles to establish the one normalcy he once knew. The series depicts my sons maturing life, clashing with responsibilities of being a big brother, getting older, and the freedom of being a kid. As a mother, I find this evolution very fascinating, heart warming, and heart breaking. Seeing a character develop in my son, and the realization that he gets closer to leaving me every day. I chose this topic because I am very much fascinated with, not only the evolution of my little man, but the development of a child’s mind. It is so amazing to me how a personality is created and how the environment plays a part in it. The idea that my existence is a solid factor in the character of my son. And how such a young person can be so protective, and unselfish, but still fragile and dependent. I created this series to document a child’s evolution for myself but also a universal depiction of how advanced a child’s mind really is. The intended message is to recognize that a young child has just as much of an alternating life as an adult.
My visual style will incorporate the series in diptychs to better represent the juxtaposing events of my sons life. There will also be a singular image incorporated to represent ones true self, and identity. I will capture these images using digital photography in landscape format. The series will be represented in color and will be shot with a Canon 7D Mark ll.
